A Shuffle on mobile

Level 1063 Reality shuffling

A Shuffle on Flash

A shuffle is a phenomenon in Candy Crush Saga, when all the candies on the board are shuffled, usually only applied when the player has no more possible switches. Occasionally, a booster can be used to shuffle to get out of a disadvantageous candy arrangement.

Shuffles are very common in levels with constrained layouts, and levels with more colours. Shuffles are usually beneficial since it allowed the board to refresh from configurations which will force a sequence of simple matches which waste moves.

Properties[]

Shuffling literally shuffles the existing applicable candies to a different permutation. It does not change the distribution of candy types and colours. The result after shuffling might already contain matches.

Objects that are excluded from shuffling include immovable blockers, special candies (except lucky candies), liquorice swirls, sugar keys, mystery candies, extra time candies, and ingredients. A shuffle can still result even if you have a coconut wheel and colour bombs, due to the layout or due to being surrounded by ingredients and blockers.

Unwinnable[]

In this situation, no matter what shuffle outcome you get, you will not have a possible switch. You will fail the level without the option to continue.

Every shuffle is guaranteed to yield a permutation of the existing candies such that a match can be made. It is possible that the player can no longer make any matches after any amount of shuffling. There is an algorithm to decide if no more matches are possible even after all shuffles, and if so, the player reaches an unwinnable state.

The player will immediately fail the level without any option to continue, even if this can be resolved via a lollipop hammer. This is a much less common method of failing a level than running out of moves, commonly realized as an "Oh No!".

History[]

Candy_Crush_Saga_Gameplay_First_Look_(Episode_1_-_10_levels)

Candy Crush Saga Gameplay First Look (Episode 1 - 10 levels)

An 2012 April 15 playthrough, likely the first hard-released Flash version. The player has no possible moves in Level 5 @ 9:33 in the video. The player instantly fails instead of getting a shuffle.

This is not one of the mechanics introduced since the game's inception. On the earliest Flash versions, well before the game was released on mobile, having no more possible moves was considered unwinnable, and the player fails the level. This made the game extremely frustrating due to the risk of an unfair loss. Shuffle appeared no later than the release of Gingerbread Glade on Flash, on 2012 August 02.[1]

On the web version before the release of Sour Salon, it used to cost 5 seconds for timed levels or one move for other types of levels. If a shuffle occurs with only 1 move left, the player would fail the level without seeing the shuffle animation and the reason for failure will be "No more possible switches"; the player will be deemed unwinnable. Similarly, in timed levels, the player would automatically lose a life if there are no more viable switches when the time remaining is less than 5 seconds. This behaviour was also corrected on mobile, at v1.72 or earlier. Before that version, shuffle would take 2 seconds off the clock. Shuffling nowadays do longer cost anything.

On Flash, all the candies go into a pink bag in the centre of the screen and are then shook and then they come out of the bag shuffled randomly. All regular candies and candy bombs are shuffled. At the top of the screen during a shuffle, it will read, "No more possible switches! Shuffling". On mobile/HTML5, a gray banner will drop, stating "No more possible switches! Shuffling", while shuffled candies disapparate and than apparate in a different permutation.

Originally, on mobile, it was extremely unlikely to gain a match as the candies were always put in a fashion where another match is needed. However, recent updates do not avoid shuffles that have matching candies. On the web version after Candy Keep was released, striped candies and wrapped candies will stay in place. However, candy bombs will be shuffled. It made many levels like 445 and 734 easier as the bombs will be easier to defuse or the special candy will stay in place. It was vice versa in the past.

Later, this phenomenon in 2 sequels Candy Crush Soda Saga and Candy Crush Jelly Saga was also applied to mobile.

It is possible for a multiple shuffle to occur, usually due to cascades happening after shuffling.

  • What has to happen is that the first shuffle happens and after the shuffle, the only possible move is then blocked by chocolate, bringing on a second shuffle. Double shuffles can also happen with chameleon candies, when in the second shuffle happens after the chameleon candies change colours following the first shuffle. In that case, there are still no possible moves after the first shuffle because the chameleon candies have changed their colours. What can also happen is that the shuffle causes a combination to occur, upon which no other combinations can be made, and the shuffle happens again without any moves being used.
  • On earlier versions, unwinnable states are slightly more common. The player can become unwinnable if the shuffle still did not contain an available match.
  • Since shuffles now generally admit permutations with matched candies, that phenomenon has become much more common, especially on constrained boards.

In Diamond Digger Saga, that are Shuffling also when the Diamond Digger Saga player runs out of valid moves, and the message will says (No valid moves! Shuffling...), see also (Level Failed! No more matching groups of diamonds.).

Trivia[]

  • The bag that is used for shuffling in the web version has the logo of Candy Crush Saga on it.
  • Although rare, shuffling may also occur immediately after the level starts, most notably in levels such as 303 and 472.
  • On the web version, candies are put into different places after a shuffle, sometimes matching 3 of the same kind. This can make you furious. For example, if it matches with 3 of the same kind including the wrapped candy, it may blow up a striped candy nearby. The striped candy may be reserved because you want to match it with the wrapped candy and vice versa. However, shuffling may rarely give you colour bombs, which may be useful.
    • Before the candies are shuffled, they briefly appear as if they had already been shuffled, hence allowing the player to make a rough prediction as to the shuffle's usefulness.
