  • UPDATE: The blog supposed to be highlighted but it wasn't possible so I made forum about this

Everyone may know that we are constantly under an attack by Fiona Fortuna, Houroso, Kool and other trolls. Me and Felix Vasecka has however got an idea with the help of Docheongong: He showed us a new users list, which shows all new users who has made an account here.

Our idea is that every mod will take a look to a list whenever they can and right away ban the suspicious accounts who might be sockpuppets. This way we can possibly prevent trolls coming our chat with much better chance. And probably someday, Paskys and pals won't never ever settle their butts on our chat again.

The good new user's rate is less then 2%, so keeping an eye to those is necessary.

Seems these accounts are created on this community. According to the chat ban log and user creation log, most of recently created accounts that are listed on both logs have inappropriate username to insult or pretend somebody. It is good to prevent to block these accounts when they are created as they already violates Wikia Terms of Use with such usernames.

However, some of the usernames may similar to multiple account's pattern(Such as Fiona of Amber and Koolguy1230) need to be checked it is good or not on public places.

I agree. This is recommended so that there will be no more sockpuppets.

      Edit: I agree with Imamadmad.

I'm always nervous of banning people before you give them a chance to do something wrong. The obviously troll names, such as those containing swear words or obviously trying to imitate certain regular users' names, should be blocked immediately, but other ones should be given a chance. There could be multiple people out there with a username containing "Kool" who aren't Kool himself. Generally speaking, let a person prove they are malicious before a block. Remember the golden rule of wiki editing: Always assume good faith!

I agree to have this idea, but there are still some innocent users who didn't know who is the malicious 'Kool', so they might name themselves as 'Kool' (which is what Imamadmad said). However, sockpuppets of Fiona Fortuna, Paskys, and Nick Pagotto should be pretty easy to spot.

      Seriously, who's Nick?

for blocking accounts with inappropriate/offensive names (isn't ban superfluous with block in effect?)

on other "suspicious" user names. Some may be more obvious than others, and for those I'd support banning, for less obvious or ambigious ones, I'd oppose.

    • If we put these names in the blacklist, could be that an alternative to troll banning?

With suspicious I mean that you can always ask from admins if you are not sure if the account is troll

There is abuse filter that can automatically block users with username pattern. However, this seems only working when the user is making an edit. Creating account(Rarely working when the user makes an account on this community and IP address is blocked) and joining chat with such usernames can't catch these accounts.

Does sound like a great idea in reducing the amount of effort to browse some options.

I think there is a way to block people from creating accounts under certain names, however it wastes more of the troll's time if they have to first create an account and then try to edit before finding out that name isn't allowed and that they're auto-blocked, rather than telling them straight away, which should help deter them from making more socks.

As some users said above, some have names that LOOK like sockpuppet account names, but they're just innocent users that didn't know about the original vandal. A good example is Fiona212.

      Banning those with innapropriate usernames

      Sort-neutralNeutral

Banning those with trolling-like usernames. Those peope could be innocent and should be allowed a chance. Besides, those trolls could be reading this thread right now and will just create an entrely new username.
